Home Renovation Ideas to Update the Appearance of Your Residence

About Me
How to Extend Your Property

Hello, my name is Danny and this is my new blog. I live in Sydney, Australia in my dream property. When I bought this house, it wasn't my dream at all but I could see that the place had potential. When I first saw the place, I knew it had potential but it was a little small. I bought it and decided to extend the kitchen and dining room out into the yard. I am not a construction professional so I had no idea how to do this. Thankfully, my friend recommended a fantastic contractor who helped me plan the work and then completed the work in super quick time. I learnt a lot so I would like to share it here.

When it comes to home renovations, individuals will typically resort to them if they find that parts of their home have acquired damage and are in need repair. However, home improvements should not exclusively be resorted to when you are looking to restore your residence. If you find that the interior of your home has started to look outdated, you should engage in renovations that would give it a contemporary and modern appeal. Not only do these improvements boost the aesthetics of the home, but it also increases the value of the residence if you decide to sell it. Here are a few renovation ideas that you can use to update the appearance of your house.

Tip 1: Get rid of walls

The staple floor design in old homes is having everything boxed in. Every individual space will be demarcated by being closed off with walls. This approach may seem functional as it means every aspect of your home is accounted for, but it can make your home look cramped especially if you have limited space available. Rather than have a conglomeration of segregated areas, you should consider knocking down a few walls. Open floor plans have steadily increased in popularity as it allows homeowners to make their space appear large, while also promoting illumination around the home. One of the walls you could knock down is the one separating the kitchen and the living to create a seamless space, which would be ideal for entertaining guests.

Tip 2: Get rid of boxy cabinets

Storage is paramount in any residence. In years past, this storage was created in the form of cabinetry. As such, you will find kitchen, bathrooms and living rooms will contain a hoard of boxy cabinets to ensure the homeowners have adequate space to store their items. What you may not realise about these cabinets is that they take up space since they protrude out. As such, small kitchen or bathroom will look significantly tinier with a myriad of cabinets. This increased storage space can inadvertently make your rooms look cramped when in fact they are supposed to help with the clutter. Fixing this does not mean that you have to compromise on your storage though. One of the solutions you could consider is open shelving. Open shelves create the illusion of more space since there are no additional enclosures in the room. Another option would be to have the cabinets recessed into your walls rather than having them installed over them.
